Are you worried that none of your investments are worthy of 80C deductions this year? No home loan EMIs or very little insurance premiums to claim deduction on? Wait. If you have kids taking education you still have some more tax money to save on their tuition fees.
Tax deduction on children's tuition fee
The tuition fee paid for your child's education has Income Tax deduction under section 80C. This is subject to cap of Rs 1 lakh for all 80C deductions.
You can claim this education tuition fee deduction if your kid attends a full time school, college, university or any other recognized educational institutions based in India. Coaching class fee or private tuition fee cannot be claimed since they are not recognized by any government board. Children's education fee deduction can be claimed for at most 2 children.
Not the entire fee can be claimed under section 80C fee deduction. The deduction is applicable only to tuition fee. Donation, development fee or such other payments cannot be claimed for deduction.
How to claim tax deduction on tuition fee
Just like you would have done with other 80C deductions like ELSS or insurance premium, show the fee receipt to HR when that time of the year comes around. In colleges, fees are usually paid annually so you get receipt for the year. If it is a school, request for a slip showing annual tuition fee payment, if possible, to make things easy.
If you miss taking tuition fee rebate in your company, claim it by filing Income Tax Return by due date in the following year.
