Procedure: How to Pay Advance Tax

  1. Though it is not possible to know your exact tax liability before the end of the financial year you can estimate your income. If tax liability is Rs 5,000 or more and TDS is not applicable for that amount then you need to pay advance tax.
  2. 30% of estimated tax is to be paid on or before 15 September, 60% on or before 15 December and 100% by 15 March of the same financial year as your income is earned.

  1. Go to https://onlineservices.tin.nsdl.com/etaxnew/tdsnontds.jsp and click on Challan ITNS 280. It will lead to an e-Payment page.  
  2. In the field for Tax Applicable select option 0021 for 'Income Tax Other Than Companies'. Correctly fill in applicable assessment year and personal details including PAN. In field Type of Payment choose option 100 for 'Advance Tax'.
  3. Select bank where you have a net banking account and enter captcha code.
  4. You will be lead to net banking site of bank you selected. Log in through your user id and password.
  5. In field for Details of Payment you need to fill in amount of payment under applicable subs. Enter the Income Tax amount in the cell as assessed by you. Surcharge is not applicable for assessment year 2013-14. Education cess is 3% of the Income tax computed. If you added it in the first cell leave this one blank.
  6. On successfully paying the amount a counterfoil will be displayed having your Challan Identification Number (CIN). CIN is unique and is proof of your tax payment. You have to quote it while filing tax returns.

  1. You have the option to pay advance tax at bank in cash or cheque mode. Challan ITNS 280 is the one to be filled. You can download it from http://law.incometaxindia.gov.in/dittaxmann/incometaxrules/pdf/challanitns-280.pdf or get it from the bank itself. Many banks accept income tax payment at their branches. You can check list of nearest branch at https://www.tin-nsdl.com/oltas/oltas-bank-branches.php
  2. In field for Tax Applicable select option 0021 for 'Income Tax Other Than Companies'. Correctly fill in applicable assessment year and personal details including PAN. In field Type of Payment choose option 100 for 'Advance Tax'.

  4. Fill up taxpayer's counterfoil as well at the bottom. Once you submit challan 280 along with cash or cheque the bank will return counterfoil with its seal and Challan Identification Number (CIN). If you are paying by advance tax by cheque at a branch where you do not have an account the bank might give you an acknowledge slip with a token number and on encashment of cheque you can go back to collect your counterfoil with CIN.
