Procedure: How to Cancel a Blank Cheque

  1. Often when you provide detail of your bank account for receiving payment in, the concerned party will ask for a cancelled cheque. A cancelled cheque is simply proof that the account details provided by you are correct; and that the account indeed belongs to you. These days, cheques have name of the account holder printed on the cheque along with account number, MICR and IFSC code of the bank. If it a non-CTS 2010 cheque- that does not have name of account number printed- they might ask attested passbook page having your name, along with the cancelled cheque.

  1. To write a cancelled cheque write 'CANCELLED' on the face of the cheque. The common practice is to people draw two parallel, diagonal lines across the cheque and write the words 'CANCELLED' between them. See image of sample cancelled cheque.
  2. Some institutions might require you to sign on the cheque. Signing on a cancelled cheque does not make it unsafe. However, it is a good practice to write on top of the cheque the purpose for which it is issued. For instance, if you are giving the cheque for mutual fund SIP, write on top, "For starting SIP in XYZ fund".
