Your PAN number holds key to a vast set of information from your income tax details to your tax assessment jurisdiction. Not all of this can be accessed but you can know your income tax assessing officer jurisdiction by entering your PAN number on income tax website.
To search your Assessing Officer (AO) code visit url https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/e-Filing/Services/KnowYourJurisdictionLink.html (try Firefox if page does not open in Chrome or IE browsers) and punch in your PAN and the captcha code provided. Your AO code along with jurisdiction will be displayed. AO code is a combination of Area Code, AO Type, Range Code and AO Number.
If you want to know your AO code for PAN application you can search it by city. Visit https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan/servlet/AOSearch and search by the starting letter of your city. If applying in Mumbai search by residential address; if elsewhere search by office address.
For applicants from Mumbai this is the procedure to be followed. If you know your Ward/Circle/Range/Commissioner your search is easier. Else you can search by pincode or first alphabet of last name. If you are salaried your AO code has to be searched by PIN of residence. If business is your source of income then search by first alphabets of first name. In other cases search by PIN of residential address.
