Kisan Vikas Patra
June 07 , 2012

The Kisan Vikas Patra is a safe Government backed investment vehicle available at post offices across India. The money is locked-in for 8 years and 7 months, within which it doubles. This works out to a return of about 8.4% annually (not a bad one in the current context, we might add!)

The KVP interest is taxed as income. Thus, it is most useful for retired persons, who do not otherwise fall under a high tax bracket. For people falling under a high tax bracket, while the interest is received from KVP only at the end (in the form of doubling the investment), the tax needs to be paid every year in the interim, for the interest accrued in that year. This has to be paid from your pocket much before you receive the interest – this makes it unattractive.

Note: KVP has been discontinued wef 1 December 2011.
