Check Your Provident Fund (EPF) Balance Online in E-Passbook
February 13 , 2013

Employee Provident Fund (EPF) or more popularly the PF is a silent retirement corpus builder for many salaried people in India. Since it is in auto mode- the employer opens it on your behalf and contributions are made by him, most people rarely bother about checking their EPF balances. In November 2012 the EPFO launched e-Passbook facility that enables one to check their EPF balance on-the-go.

What is EPFO e-passbook?

E-passbook is the electronic version of your EPF passbook. It has date wise details of contributions in your PF account up to the last entry updated by your employer. E-passbook can be downloaded from EPFO services website and viewed as many times as you like.

E-passbook facility is available for only those PFs managed by EPFO. If your company's PF is managed privately you would not be able to see your PF account balance. Your employer should first upload Electronic Challan cum Return on the portal for March 2012. Remittances from April 2012 are being compulsorily made through employer portal of EPFO. Opening balance has been taken as on 31 March 2011. Hence for employees of most companies, PF details from March 2011 are available or even older data if it has been updated by your employer.

Online registration in EPFO member portal

In order to get your EPF passbook you need to register on EPFO member portal. Registration is easy- you do not require your PF account details. All you need is your identity number on any of the these documents- Passport, PAN, Voter ID, Ration card, Diving license, Bank passbook, National Population Register or Aadhar for creating your user id on the member portal. Your mobile phone number will be the password.

After registering you can go back and add multiple documents and identity numbers. A mobile number can be used for only one registration. But in case you lose the number you can log in to change it.

Currently only employees with active PF account can view their e-passbook online. However, retired employees or those who quit before March 2012 can still make request with EPFO to get their e-passbook.

How to view PF account online?

On the EPFO member portal you can log in using any of your document identity number registered for username. On entering mobile number for password you will be prompted to enter a PIN sent on your registered mobile number. This is to prevent any random person from accessing your PF account details. This is the process to follow every time you want to check your EPF balance online.

After entering the PIN you will be asked to choose your State and EPFO office jurisdiction, company code number, your name and finally PF account number. EPFO office jurisdiction and company code number can be found using Establishment Search facility on the website.

If your passbook is ready you will be sent a PIN on your mobile number which must be entered. After this you will be sent a link for your EPF e-passbook. You can open this, view your passbook and download it on your system. At times it may take 2-3 days to get the e-passbook.
